Sheilds Lake: Episode 2
Two years ago, I did true mountain biking for the first time. Yesterday, I went for the second time. I loaded up my bike and headed out to Sea-to-Sea Park in Sooke. This is a park filled with intense and frankly dangerous mountain bike trails that are way out of my league. Beyond that, I’m really not into just going for the sake of going. … Continue reading Sheilds Lake: Episode 2
Quenching my Obsession with Transit: Remote Rural Bus Routes and a Monorail (not in the same place)
I have an addiction. I love transit, and that is an understatement. Since Christmas I’ve spent a lot of time both at the public and UVIC libraries digging through what they have about public transportation. I’ve found a few great books so far but the real goldmine was in UVIC’s special collections. In Summer of 2019, UVIC received a donation of a few very old … Continue reading Quenching my Obsession with Transit: Remote Rural Bus Routes and a Monorail (not in the same place)
The Enterprise is in the Spacedock for Refit
The Starprise Entership, aptly named by my girlfriend, is coming along nicely. After three days of really monotonous cleaning, sanding and polishing, the topsides of the hull are look exceptional. I still need to do the entire lower hull itself but this was a good place to start as I can stand back and look at what started as, well, garbage that we pulled out … Continue reading The Enterprise is in the Spacedock for Refit
I should buy a boat…
I didn’t though. Instead, I got one for free. As anyone in the sailing community will attest, there is no such thing as a free boat. This story starts about two years ago and this post will wrap up today. Two years ago (well, a year and a half) I was invited to go sailing with a friend from university. I already covered that experience … Continue reading I should buy a boat…
VIA Rail: Canada’s National Heritage Railway
VIA Rail rocks. Simple as that. Sure, I’m going to be rolling into Edmonton four hours late because CN literally removed the tracks this train was supposed to use, but that has nothing to do with VIA Rail. But why do I love it? Well, I arrive at the station and they’ve already lost my reservation and tell me I cant get on the train. No, that’s … Continue reading VIA Rail: Canada’s National Heritage Railway
Traveling Across the Country When Everything Is Closed
I was very excited to be travelling all the way across my country by train. I love trains, I always have. One of the main reasons I’m doing this is to take the train itself. Curiously, I managed to buy myself a train ticket that sends me across Canada when some of the things I was most excited to experience… are closed. The Canadian Parliament … Continue reading Traveling Across the Country When Everything Is Closed
Goodbye (for now), University. Hello, career.
In first year, I was relieved to be continuing with education. I loved learning, I loved the challenge. By the end of that year my confidence with that position was wavering but I still loved being in university despite hating the social environment. By the end of second year, I had transferred into a program to get an employable degree in a field I am … Continue reading Goodbye (for now), University. Hello, career.
When VIA Rail charges $25 per ticket to bring a bike, my bike becomes a suitcase.
VIA Rail has some good progressive policies: they recognize that young adults are broke and offer the youth discount up to age 25, they sell sleeper fares at deep discount to make sure their trains are full, they allow for unmarked rural stops to serve remote communities… but don’t even think of bringing a bike. I paid $350 for my entire summer of train travel, … Continue reading When VIA Rail charges $25 per ticket to bring a bike, my bike becomes a suitcase.
